Before we press play
Turn to your partner. You have 3 minutes. No devices yet — just talk.
- 1 What is one show, game, or song from your childhood that you still remember clearly? Why do you think it stuck?
- 2 Do you think something can be "for children" and "meaningful for adults" at the same time? Give an example.
- 3 If a game or app tracked everything you did while playing it, how would that make you feel?
Match the word to its meaning
These words often appear in "journey" and "adventure" stories. Match each word to its meaning before you listen. Click a word, then click its match.
Word
Meaning
trainer → a person who teaches or guides someone/something
rival → a person who competes against you for the same goal
courage → the bravery needed to face something difficult
bond → a close connection or relationship between two beings
determination → a firm decision to keep trying despite difficulty
capture → to catch or take hold of something
Pokémon: Indigo League — Opening Theme
Listen once for enjoyment. We'll listen again with a task on the next slide.
Talk it through
- 1 What is the overall goal or mission described in the song, in your own words?
- 2 How does the music (tempo, instruments, energy) support the message of the song?
- 3 Songs like this are often called "anthems." What makes a song feel like an anthem rather than just a song?
- 4 If you wrote a personal "trainer's anthem" about your own goals as a student, what would the chorus say?
You are a trainer on day one
Work with your partner. One of you is a new trainer setting off on a journey; the other is a mentor giving advice. Speak for 2 minutes each, then swap roles.
🎒 Role A — New Trainer
- Explain why you're starting this journey.
- Describe one fear and one hope you have.
- Use at least 3 words from the matching task.
🧭 Role B — Mentor
- Give advice using modal verbs (should, must, could).
- Ask 2 follow-up questions.
- Focus on clear pronunciation and pace.
Predict before you watch
The next video's title is: "You were training AI while catching Pokémon." Before watching, answer individually.
You Were Training AI While Catching Pokémon
This is an information-dense video. Watch it twice if needed — once for gist, once for detail.
Comprehension check — Questions 1–8
Choose the best answer or fill in the blank based on the video.
Comprehension check — Questions 9–15
Key terms from the video
Read the term and its meaning, then use two of them in a sentence of your own (say it aloud to your partner).
related to the location and position of things on the Earth's surface
technology that adds digital images onto a view of the real world
a large, organised collection of data used for analysis or training
a set of rules a computer follows to solve a problem or make a decision
clear permission given by someone before something is done
close, often continuous, observation of a person or place
to collect large amounts of information, often automatically
a technology that identifies the exact location of an object
The passive voice: when the "doer" fades
Technology reports often hide who is responsible. Rewrite each active sentence in the passive voice, focusing on the action, not the actor.
Unpack the bigger idea
- 1 In your own words, what was really being collected while people played the game?
- 2 Why might a company use a game, instead of a plain request, to gather this kind of information?
- 3 The video compares this to another well-known technology. What similarity does it point out?
- 4 What does "consent" mean to you in this context — is clicking "I agree" enough?
- 5 Could something similar be happening in an app you use daily? Which one, and how?
Motion: "Gamified data collection without clear consent is unethical."
Split into two teams. Prepare for 5 minutes, then debate for 10. Use persuasive language and at least one vocabulary word from this lesson per turn.
⚖️ Team FOR the motion
- Argue that hidden data collection breaks trust.
- Discuss what "informed consent" should look like.
- Use phrases like "It is unacceptable that…", "This raises the concern that…"
⚖️ Team AGAINST the motion
- Argue the practice is normal and disclosed in policies.
- Discuss the benefits of the technology built from it.
- Use phrases like "It could be argued that…", "On balance, this benefits…"
Pitch: "The App We'd Build Responsibly"
In groups of 3–4, design a two-minute pitch for an app that collects location or image data — but does it ethically. Present to another group.
- 1 What does your app do, and what data does it need?
- 2 How do you get real, clear consent from users?
- 3 One creative feature that makes your app fun to use.
- 4 One sentence that could go directly into your privacy policy.
Final review — both videos
A mix of question types pulling together everything from today's lesson.
Before you go
Write a few honest sentences. This is for you, not for grading.
Great work, trainers.
You listened critically, spoke persuasively, and questioned the technology around you — that's exactly what advanced English users do.
📌 Exit ticket
Hand in one sentence: one new word you'll actually use this week.
🔁 Next class
We'll revisit passive voice in a writing task.
